Did You Know? By Nelly the Narwhal

Hello, dear reader! I’m Nelly the Narwhal, and today I want to share something fascinating about myself that many of you may not know. Let’s talk about my fabulous tooth—yes, the one that looks like a unicorn’s horn!

You see, while some believe it to be a mystical horn, it’s actually a very special tooth, and I take immense pride in it. This spiralled wonder can grow up to 10 feet long! Imagine having a tooth taller than most humans. Not every narwhal has it though; it's usually the males like me that sport this grand feature, although some females have it too.

What makes my tooth truly extraordinary is its sensory capabilities. It’s not just for show. The surface is covered with millions of nerve endings, allowing me to detect changes in the surrounding water—like salinity levels and temperatures—which is incredibly handy in the cold Arctic waters where I live.

Contrary to first impressions, it's not used for battling other narwhals or hunting prey. Instead, it’s a tool for communication and sensing. We sometimes rub our tusks together in a behaviour known as ‘tusking,’ which helps us share information and perhaps even strengthen social bonds.

So next time you think of me, remember that my tooth is not just an ornamental accessory but a remarkable and multifunctional feature that plays a significant role in my life. Isn’t the natural world just full of wonders?

I hope this article adds a little sparkle to your day, offering a glimpse into the remarkable life of us narwhals!
