Peacock Butterfly: From Leaf to Wing

Peacock Butterfly: From Leaf to Wing

You spotted me, didn’t you? Wings open wide, bold eyes staring back — I don’t hide easily. I’m a Peacock Butterfly, named for the shimmering ‘eyes’ I wear. They’re not just for show, though. Startle a bird or two and you’ll see how useful these patterns can be.

My early days I began life as an egg on a stinging nettle — not the cosiest place, but perfect for a growing caterpillar. When I hatched, I was small and hungry. I spent my days eating and growing, shedding my skin a few times until I was ready to tuck myself into a chrysalis. And then… transformation. It still amazes me, every time.

Where I flutter Gardens, woodlands, meadows — anywhere with flowers and sunshine. I’m especially fond of buddleia (that’s the “butterfly bush” to you) and wild patches full of nectar. If you see me early in spring, I’ve just woken up from a long winter rest. I’m one of the few butterflies that hibernate as adults.

Cousins in colour Butterflies come in all shapes and shades. The Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral, Brimstone — we all share the skies but lead different lives. Some migrate, some stay local. Some prefer woodland shade, others bask in open fields. Together, we weave colour into the landscape.

A fragile beauty Our wings are delicate, and so is the world we depend on. Pesticides, habitat loss, and fewer wildflowers have made life harder for many of us. But with a little care — letting weeds grow, planting native flowers — you make space for butterflies to thrive.
