Bumblebee: A Little Buzz in a Big World

Bumblebee: A Little Buzz in a Big World

Hello down there.
If you've heard a gentle hum nearby, chances are it was me. I’m a bumblebee — round, fuzzy, and always in a bit of a hurry. I might look soft (and I am), but don’t be fooled. I’m strong, focused, and one of nature’s most hardworking pollinators.

How I live
Unlike honeybees, my colony is small. We don’t build big hives or store jars of golden treasure. My queen sets up home in an old mouse hole or a patch of long grass, and we spend the season gathering nectar and pollen, feeding our young, and keeping our little nest buzzing with life.

What I love
I’m all about wildflowers — clover, foxglove, vetch. The ones with deep tubes and rich nectar. I can fly in colder weather than many bees, and my soft coat keeps me cosy on early spring mornings. You might see me flying low over the ground, always scanning for the next bloom.

Bees of all kinds
There are over 20,000 species of bees in the world. Some live in hives, some nest alone in walls or soil. But every bee, no matter how small, helps keep plants growing, fruit ripening, and wild spaces full of life.

Why I need your help
Fewer flowers, tidy lawns, and chemicals in the garden make life tough for bees. But it’s easy to help. Plant a few native wildflowers. Leave a corner of your garden wild. Let dandelions bloom in spring. Small changes make a big difference for bees like me.
