“In the Stillness, I See”
Where I live
I dwell in the lush rainforests of Central and South America - calling softly from the canopy, hidden by vines and leaves thick with life.
My home is warm, green, and full of hidden things.
What I eat
I am a patient hunter. Insects, frogs, bats, and small mammals are all part of my nightly menu. I wait. I listen. I strike without sound.
My cousins and how we differ
Some owls are snow-white and ghostly. Others wear golden feathers or broad, horn-like tufts.
But I wear spectacles - dark rings around my eyes like old glasses.
It makes me look older than I am, perhaps. But I don’t mind.
I see clearly, and that’s what matters.
A fun fact about me
As a chick, I’m completely white - a puffball with oversized eyes.
Only later do I grow into my darker, chocolatey feathers and gain the markings that name me.
It’s as if I grow backwards - from light to dark - a little mystery of the forest.
What I hope you'll remember
That wisdom is not loud. That silence holds answers. And that the eyes of the night are not to be feared, but respected - for we see what daylight often misses.
